Seth MacFarlane to Direct and Star in Live-Action Western Comedy A MILLION WAYS TO DIE IN THE WEST

It appears that Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane has plotted his feature film follow-up to Ted.  MacFarlane made his feature directorial debut with the live-action/CG comedy Ted this summer to wildly successful results, with the film grossing a little over $500 million in its theatrical run.  MacFarlane now has a bit of clout in choosing his next project, and it appears that he’s going an original Western comedy that he co-wrote with Ted/Family Guy writers Alec Sulkin and Wellesley Wild called A Million Ways to Die in the West.  Hit the jump for more.  Per Heat Vision, MacFarlane plans to direct and star in the live-action film, which is said to be in the vein of Blazing Saddles.  The pic is described as “a Western with contemporary humor, with one undercurrent being just how dangerous and painful life really was in the late 1800s.”  It’s not surprising that MacFarlane is going with an original property as his Ted follow-up, but I do find it interesting that he also plans to star in the live-action film.  He technically “starred” in Ted, as he voiced the titular bear and performed the role using motion-capture technology, but this would be his first time in front of the camera without some sort of animation driving his character [Edit: I was unaware that MacFarlane has a bit of on-camera acting experience, as he's appeared in 2010's Tooth Fairy and a couple of episodes of Gilmore Girls]. MacFarlane drew fairly strong marks for his hosting duties on Saturday ...

Actor/writer/director Seth MacFarlane is roping in some Oscar-caliber talent for his second directorial feature film. Charlize Theron is in talks to star in the western comedy A Million Ways to Die in the West, which MacFarlane will both direct and star in.  The story centers on a farmer whose girlfriend leaves him after he chickens out of a gunfight.  “When he meets the wife of a notorious outlaw who offers to teach him how to shoot, the farmer at first sees a chance to win back his love but slowly falls for the woman. Complications ensue when the outlaw returns and reclaims his woman.”  Hit the jump for more details. News of Theron’s casting comes via Heat Vision, who reports that the actress is in final negotiations to star in the film.  This sounds like spot-on casting for Theron, who has a wicked sense of humor and has proven herself to be a formidable badass.  In addition to starring in and directing the live-action comedy, MacFarlane also co-wrote the script alongside Ted and Family Guy writers Alec Sulkin and Wellesley Wild.  He’s currently busy preparing for his Oscar hosting duties in late February, but a May production start date is being eyed for A Million Ways to Die in the West. Theron most recently wrapped a starring role in George Miller’s long-delayed Mad Max: Fury Road and she’s also set to lead a remake of Park Chan-wook’s Sympathy for Lady Vengeance, which she’s producing.  MacFarlane has a sequel to Ted in the ...

Amanda Seyfried in Talks to Join Seth MacFarlane’s Comedy A MILLION WAYS TO DIE IN THE WEST

Amanda Seyfried (Lovelace) is in talks to join the growing cast of A Million Ways to Die in the West, the new comedy directed by and starring Seth MacFarlane (Ted).  The Western comedy centers on a cowardly farmer who backs out of a gunfight and subsequently loses his girlfriend.  When he later meets the wife of a notorious outlaw who teaches him how to shoot, he gets an opportunity to win his pride back, but must choose between reclaiming an old love or kindling a new one.  The plot thickens when the outlaw returns to claim his woman.  Hit the jump for more on A Million Ways to Die in the West. Heat Vision reports that Seyfried is in talks to join the cast of A Million Ways to Die in the West as the protagonist's disappointed girlfriend.  We previously reported that Charlize Theron (Prometheus) was in negotiations to play the outlaw's wife.  Both Seyfried and Theron have the comic sensibilities to work well opposite MacFarlane, who also co-wrote the script with Alec Sulkin and Wellesley Wild.  It's MacFarlane that I'm more curious about.  He's had a wealth of voice-acting roles, but far fewer live-action performances and I've yet to see him play a character with any sense of humility.  In order for this comedy to work, I'm expecting a different note out of MacFarlane than anything we've seen so far.  I'm  curious to see how well he pulls it off.  Production on A Million Ways to Die in the West begins this May.

Get ready for a double-barrel shot of casting for Seth MacFarlane's A Million Ways to Die in the West!  Word has it that Liam Neeson (Taken) is in negotiations to play the film's nefarious outlaw whose wife teaches a cowardly farmer the ways of gun-fighting in order for him to win back his lady love.  Giovanni Ribisi (Gangster Squad) is also on board the comedy Western as the protag's equally-spineless best friend.  A Million Ways to Die in the West also stars Charlize Theron (Prometheus) and Amanda Seyfried (Les Miserables), making the principal cast just about set.  Hit the jump for more. THR reports that Neeson is in negotiations to join A Million Ways to Die in the West as the film's major antagonist.  Written by MacFarlane and Alec Sulkin and Wellesley Wild (Ted, Family Guy), the picture centers on Albert (MacFarlane), a sheep farmer who chickens out of a duel and loses his girlfriend (Seyfried) as a result.  In an effort to win her back, Albert makes the acquaintance of an outlaw's wife (Theron) who teaches him how to duel.  The plot thickens when Albert begins to fall for her and when the outlaw himself returns to reclaim his woman. Deadline also reports that Ribisi has joined A Milliion Ways to Die in the West.  The role, once reportedly offered to Jonah Hill (Django Unchained), is that of Edward, a simple cobbler whose girlfriend who won’t have sex with him, but works as prostitute for everyone else in town. Edward tries to get Albert back ...

Family Guy mastermind Seth MacFarlane’s next feature directorial effort is adding yet another impressive castmember.  MacFarlane’s Ted follow-up, A Million Ways to Die in the West, already has Charlize Theron, Liam Neeson, Amanda Seyfried, and Giovanni Ribisi set to star alongside MacFarlane, and now Heat Vision reports that Sarah Silverman is in negotiations to join the cast.  The Western comedy centers on a cowardly farmer who backs out of a gunfight and subsequently loses his girlfriend (Seyfried).  He later meets the wife (Theron) of a notorious outlaw who teaches him how to shoot, but runs into trouble when her outlaw husband (Neeson) returns to town seeking revenge. Should she sign on, Silverman would play the town prostitute who has had her way with just about everyone, “but refuses to have sex with her fiancé (Ribisi), believing that as Christians the couple should wait until marriage before lying down together.”  I’d say that’s pretty spot-on casting.  Production is set to begin this spring.  Hit the jump for casting news concerning the holiday comedy A Friggin’ Christmas Miracle.  Additionally, one half of Tim & Eric and a Reno 911! Veteran are joining the cast of the comedy A Friggin’ Christmas Miracle.  The Wrap reports that Tim Heidecker (The Comedy) and Wendi McLendon-Covey (Bridesmaids) have signed on to star alongside Joel McHale, Lauren Graham, Robin Williams in the film.  The story centers on a couple (McHale and Graham) who spend a Christmas with the husband’s father and his family of misfits.  Once the husband realizes ...

MacFarlane co-wrote the script with his Ted scribes Alec Sulkin and Wellesley Wild, and in addition to starring he will also produce and direct.   A Million Ways to Die in the West opens on May 30, 2014, opposite Pixar’s The Good Dinosaur.

Universal Pictures has released the first red-band trailer for Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane’s latest directorial feature A Million Ways to Die in the West.  It's also MacFarlane's live-action acting debut, and judging from this first look, he's actually a bit more reserved than his animated counterparts.  The dangers of the wild west more than make up for MacFarlane's toned-down performance as it looks like the film will live up to its title; just about anything and everything in this world can and will kill you in the most hilarious way possible. With an Oscar nod for Best Documentary under its belt and Matt having named it his favorite film of 2013, the last thing Joshua Oppenheimer's The Act of Killing needs is an endorsement from me. And yet, here it is. I watched the film on Netflix several weeks ago and, to be honest, I'm still having trouble coming to grips with it. It's the most the surreal and disturbing look at human atrocity I've seen and the more I think about its subjects and overall approach, the more I'm in awe of the fact that it exists. I drown in hyperbole when thinking of words to describe it because it's so profound that calling it a "good film" seems not like an understatement but a complete inaccuracy. The Act of Killing is not a "good film", it's a stunning work of humanity that makes awards, critical reception, the sentence I'm typing at this very moment, etc., seem absolutely trivial. Speaking of trivial, in what may go down as one of the worst segues in Collider history, I'll now attempt to jump into this week's Top 5. Highlighted today is Jesse Eisenberg and Jeremy Irons joining Zack Snyder's Batman vs. Superman, Steve's Neighbors set visit coverage, the first trailer for The Fault in Our Stars, Christopher Nolan's Interstellar being exempt from Paramount's digital mandate, and the first trailer for Seth MacFarlane's A Million Ways to Die in the West. The first quarter of 2014 had a good handful of movies that lived up to our expectations including The LEGO Movie, The Raid 2, The Grand Budapest Hotel, and more.  Now we're at Q2, so it's time for the blockbusters.  Summer has arrived even earlier than usual with Captain America: The Winter Soldier leading off April, and there are plenty of other sequels headed our way.  There are three sequels on all three of our lists, and while it's easy to be excited when you have a good idea of what came before, there are also some fresh movies (or at least non-sequels) in the bunch. Once again, Adam, Dave, and Matt have each compiled a Top 5 list of most-anticipated movies for the next three months.  Hit the jump to find out what they can't wait to see and why. Matt's Picks [Note: I've seen Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Dom Hemingway, Under the Skin, The Unknown Known, Blue Ruin, Joe, Locke, The Double, Draft Day, God's Pocket, Cold in July, and Tracks, so they were ineligible for my "most-anticipated" list] GODZILLA Director: Gareth Edwards Cast: Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, Bryan Cranston, Ken Watanabe, Sally Hawkins, Juliette Binoche, and David Strathairn. Release Date: May 16th Why I’m Excited: I was very encouraged by what I saw when I went on the set, and even though the story was being kept under wraps, we learned that the man-vs-nature theme was going to be in play.  From a visual perspective, Edwards looks like he's come up with something very ...

Ted is the highest-grossing original R-rated comedy of all-time, and Family Guy is a huge hit, so creator Seth MacFarlane clearly has a few fans.  His latest, A Million Ways to Die in the West, looks painfully funny, and also has the same sophomoric, irreverent humor people have come to expect from him.  I'm well aware that his comedy isn't for everyone, but for those who like MacFarlane's work, they'll probably go for this one.  Personally, I'm all for movies where people die horribly in a hilarious fashion. Writer/Producer/Director/Actor Seth MacFarlane’s latest venture is A Million Ways to Die in the West, a comedy Western that tells the tale of Albert Stark (MacFarlane), a sheep farmer who is trying to figure out how to survive the very harsh frontier life of the 1880s.  When the mysterious and beautiful gunslinger Anna (Charlize Theron) rides into town, she helps Albert find his courage and shows him that he deserves to have someone appreciate him for who he is.  The film also stars Giovanni Ribisi, Sarah Silverman, Amanda Seyfried, Neil Patrick Harris and Liam Neeson. During a conference at the film’s press day, Seth MacFarlane and Charlize Theron talked about shooting on location in New Mexico in weather conditions that rival those in Biblical times, the biggest challenge of the post-production process, how the film tribute sequences came about, deciding on who would get cameos, how liberating it is to work on a film like this, and how everyone was starstruck by Liam Neeson.  Check out what they had to say after the jump.  Question:  Seth, we’ve heard you act more than we’ve gotten to see you act.  What was this experience like? SETH MacFARLANE:  I haven’t done it to this extent, no.  Gilmore Girls and Star Trek: Enterprise is the extent of it, with two lines apiece.   CHARLIZE THERON:  You were on Gilmore Girls?!   MacFARLANE:  Oh, yes!  THERON:  I need to go Google that.  MacFARLANE:  That did make me more than a little uneasy, going into this.  There were two things that became apparent, pretty quickly into ...
